Education Studies
Education Studies at Bakersfield College provides students with a broad-based understanding of the field of education. We offer a range of courses and experiences that explore the social, cultural, and political contexts of education and the theories and practices of teaching and learning. Through a combination of coursework, fieldwork, and practical experience, students gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of education and the roles of educators in society.
What is Education Studies?
Education Studies is an interdisciplinary academic field that explores the theoretical, social, cultural, and political dimensions of education. It is a broad-based field that covers a range of topics, including educational philosophy, history, policy, diversity, technology, and teaching and learning. Education Studies is different from teacher education programs in that it is not primarily focused on training students to become teachers, but rather on developing a deep understanding of the social, cultural, and political contexts of education and the role of education in society. Education Studies Degree and Certificates
The Education Studies Associate of Science degree is designed to prepare students for employment as an Education Paraprofessional in a TK-12 classroom and satisfies the Title I requirement of 48 college units for Education Paraprofessionals.
The Student Success with Academic Reading and Writing Emphasis Certificate is designed to support new, current, and returning students by providing tools and strategies to be successful in both traditional and online learning environments and by creating awareness of programs, services, and other student resources available at the college.
The College Success and Math Skill Building Certificate of Competency (NC) is designed to support new, current, and returning students by providing tools and strategies to be successful in both traditional and online learning environments by creating awareness of programs, services, and other student resources available at the college.
This is course is the first course in the Inclusive and Accessible Digital Content series that provides practical information and experience in creating and modifying inclusive and accessible digital content. Anyone who posts or sends information online can apply the skills practiced in this course. Topics in this course include creating and modifying accessible basic documents, images, tables, spreadsheets, presentations, pdfs, web content, and emails as well as using accessibility checkers.
This program is intended for TK-16 current and future educators as well as anyone interested in online teaching and instruction such as future administrators and instructional designers.
This certificate of achievement will provide students with the necessary knowledge for working as an entry-level educational paraprofessional in or outside of the classroom.

An Associate of Science (AS) degree and/or certificates in Education Studies can provide graduates with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to pursue various career paths in the field of education. Here are some common career options:
